What Does a Healthy Body Look Like?

April 1, 2011 · Posted in diets to lower cholesterol · Comment

You probably know many people who have tried to lose weight, are currently dieting, or at least say that they would like to drop a few pounds … one of these statements might even describe you right now. If someone wants to lose weight, we don’t normally ask them why, we usually ask ‘how much’. But the question that most people don’t consider is why. Why do you want to lose weight? What do you think will happen when you get to your goal size? For some people it might be a recommendation by their doctor and a matter of serious health problems. Any body image and aesthetic improvement would be secondary to the immediate health improvements. But for most of the rest of us the health issues are not what drives us to want to lose weight. It is in fact the look of our body that we’re interested in changing and the health benefits are secondary to the look. At first glance this seems a bit superficial and even vain. But if you dig a little deeper you’ll see that the look of your body is probably your best indicator of your health as well. After all we really only have two ways of telling if something is wrong with our bodies: a) It feels wrong – something hurts or we feel ‘sick’ b) It looks wrong – a rash, bump, scratch, swelling, a joint or bone out of place, or too much fat! The point is that we only have these two pieces of information to go on to tell if there is something wrong with our bodies.

Once we’ve seen or felt that there is a problem we can go to a doctor and get even more information that is not possible to see or feel. For example a doctor can tell you that you’re at a high risk for a heart attack even though this is not readily apparent in a mirror (although being overweight is a good indicator) and you cannot feel how close you are to having a heart attack … you only feel it once you finally have the heart attack…at which point it is too late to do anything about it. The reason we have BMI charts and recommendations of a ‘healthy’ weight is so medical care providers can give you a visual cue that matches what their internal measurements like blood cholesterol and blood pressure are telling them about your relative risk of disease. In other words, there is a specific body shape and look that also predicts healthiness. Someone who is 100 pounds overweight almost assuredly has poor blood lipid profiles, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and many other problems associated with the extra weight and the high calorie intake required to get to that size. Conversely someone who is at or close to their ideal bodyweight for their height most likely has much more favorable blood measurements and risk profile of many lifestyle related disorders. In other words, they look healthy, and all measurements indicate that they are healthy. But there is a second level of health that cannot be measured, and that is emotional health and self image. For many of us this is linked to the look of our body. It makes sense that wanting to ‘look’ good or look like you’re in shape is actually no different than saying that you want to look healthy. I may be in the minority here, but I do not agree with the new found rhetoric of ‘being happy with your natural size’ (it’s ironic that this is only ever trumpeted by people who are overweight). This is a load of baloney and is just a sympathetic appeal to overweight people who cannot find the drive to eat less.

No matter how much you try to tell yourself you’re happy with your current size, you will always know you are lying to yourself and this is not good for both your physiological health or your emotional health. Living in denial isn’t any more healthy than living overweight. Doing both just compounds the problems caused by each. I think the most healthy way to approach weight loss is to admit to yourself that you want to lose weight for the purpose of improving the look of your body. And that this new thinner look will not only improve your physical health but also your emotional and psychological health. It is in fact a wholistic view of taking care of yourself. There isn’t much disputing the fact that a healthy looking body, is almost always a healthy body.

There are many strategies by which you can lose weight. Some are the more conventional way, and then others, such as exercise, weight loss pills etc… Other processes use completely separate or alternative. Techniques such as hypnosis, acupuncture and natural herbs as an alternative as they are, can help you lose weight more effectively and without risk of side effects also.

Hypnosis is one of the hottest alternative forms of weight loss. During this process, a hypnotist takes you to a state in which your conscious mind becomes less active and unconscious mind takes over. As the subconscious stores all the information, the hypnotist digs into his past and changes the information. Thus, it helps to break various nasty habits, for example, overeating and wild desires. Often, hypnotists also provide CDs of self worth listening to and change your subconscious ideology and thoughts for the better. This method is quite safe and is offered by some very hypnotists.

Acupuncture trained is another alternative to lose weight without causing heavy damage. This is acupuncture is being discussed so you have to be ready to be pricked and pierced with small needles, but that is about the only thing that you should be worried. The first approach is to scale back the craving for food. It also helps increase the body metabolism end, and by strengthening the circulatory system. Acupuncturist will research your condition, decide on the points of critical pressure and chop them with tiny needles to get the results. Most of acupuncturists must select your thyroid startup mode for the metabolism in your mouth to control the urge to eat, stomach Obesity directly attack the spleen, so that any hormonal imbalance can be fixed and the endocrine system and to get rid of extra water in body. Goes without saying that you should choose a therapist trained for this treatment.

In addition, there are many natural herbs that can help you lose weight, but are very useful for its ability to weight loss. The main herbs that you can consider are green tea, white willow bark, guarana and psyllium. The main approach of green tea is to increase body metabolism end. It also increases thermo genesis, or heat up the body. This can help you maintain a simple and eat at the same time, make sure you burn fat and cholesterol is easily reduced. Psyllium helps to keep an eye on your hunger. A native of Brazil, Guarana is a major component of caffeine. Along with the other components of caffeine, such as the bromine and theophylline, Guarana helps to stimulate the nervous system, which in turn helps to suppress appetite, thereby encouraging weight loss. Alternatively, the white willow bark has anti inflammatory properties. It helps to increase neither levels of nor epinephrine that stimulates fat metabolism, resulting in weight loss. Still, these herbs are mostly without side effects, it is ideal to consult a doctor before using any of them. Each of these methods is very effective alone or in combination.

About Hypothyroidism – a Common Health Problem

February 9, 2011 · Posted in diets to lower cholesterol · Comment

By hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland is producing too less hormones to stimulate the metabolism, or the body is not able to utilize the hormones. The lack of thyroid hormones slows down the metabolism and thus all the activities in the body, giving a combination of many symptoms related to slowness of bodily processes.

Hypothyroidism is common, but the frequency of the condition is not well determined. Some authorities estimate that 0.5% of the total American population have the disease to some degree. The frequency is much greater among people over 50 years of age than among young people.

THE SYMPTOMS AND COMPLICATIONS OF HYPOTHYROIDISM

The most common early symptoms are: Mental and physical fatigue, weakness, weight gain or over-weight, and depression.

One or more of these symptoms also use to appear early: Constipation, sensitivity to coldness, cold hands and feet, thick tongue, decreased sweating, dry hair, thin brittle hair, thin brittle nails, muscle and joint pain, pale or yellowish skin, rashes and itching.

One or more of these symptoms usually appear later: Poor memory, slow thought process, drowsiness, slow speech, thinning of eyebrows, hoarseness, low blood pressure, poor circulation, dry and flaky skin, decreased taste and smell, menstrual irregularities, skin thickening, puffy face, puffy hands and feet, swelling of extremities, overall swelling, muscle spasms, muscle atrophy, joint stiffness.

In children or young persons hypothyroidism may give developmental problems, like disturbed tooth development and short stature.

Hypothyroidism increases the risk of elevated cholesterol levels, heart disease and diabetes (diabetes mellitus). This occurs even by moderately decreased thyroid production.

THE THYROID GLAND AND ITS HORMONES

To understand the hypothyroidism, some knowledge about the thyroid gland and its hormones is essential.

The thyroid gland produces hormones that accelerate and in other wise regulate metabolism. A part of metabolism is the process of breaking down energy containing nutrients, and using the energy to produce molecules that all the processes and activities in the body use as fuel. Another part is the production of molecules that the body use as building materials.

The thyroid makes four hormones: Thyroxin (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), diiodothyronine (T2) and monoiodothyronine (T1). The hormones contain iodine, and the figures tell about the number of iodine atoms in each hormone molecule. T3 is not made directly, but is produced from T4. T3 is a more efficient hormone than T4. Therefore this conversion is important.

The pituitary, a gland under the brain, produces a hormone called thyrotropin or thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) that enhances the activity of the thyroid gland. If the body has too less thyroid hormone in the blood, the pituitary produces more thyrotropin. This makes the thyroid gland speed up its own production. By a too heavy thyroid hormone concentration, less thyrotropin is produced by the pituitary, and the thyroid gland slows down. This feed-back mechanism regulates the metabolism of the whole body.

THE MECHANISMS AND CAUSES OF HYPOTHYROIDISM

By hypothyroidism the body does not get enough thyroid hormone, or the hormones do not work effectively in the body. This causes the metabolism to slow down. When the metabolism decreases, the processes in the body do not get enough fuel and building materials, and all the body activities will therefore slow down. Energy containing nutrient will also be stored as fat, since they are not broken down.

Serious variants of hypothyroidism are called myxedema. This is a rare condition. However, less serious, but painful variants are common. There are several reasons for hypothyroidism, each giving a variant of the disease:

*An autoimmune reaction against the thyroid tissue can destroy the capability of the thyroid gland to produce hormones (for example Hashimoto’s disease).

*Sometimes the production of T3 by conversion from T4 is impaired. The total amount of hormones may be normal in these cases, but the body is still lacking T3, and gets the symptoms of hypothyroidism.

*Iodine deficiency can cause hypothyroidism, since the thyroid hormones contain iodine. In Europe and America the food is seldom short in iodine, but bad nutrition may result in iodine deficiency.

*Surgery or radiation at the thyroid area can destroy enough tissue to cause hypothyroidism.

*Injury or disease in the pituitary or of the part of the brain controlling the pituitary may cause a decrease in secreted thyrotropin, and then the thyroid will respond by producing less of its own hormones with hypothyroidism as a result.

*Some people have symptoms of hypothyroidism even though the amount of thyroid hormone in the blood is normal. One of the symptoms is raised levels of thyrotropin, indicating that the body signals need for more thyroid hormones. This variant may be caused by conditions elsewhere in the body that make it difficult for the hormone to reach their destination in the cells. In many of these cases the immune system produces anti-bodies against the thyroid hormones. This variant is called sub-clinical hypothyroidism, and responds to the same treatment as ordinary hypothyroidism.

*Some types of food can contribute to a depressed thyroid function or aggravate hypothyroidism when eaten raw in great amounts: Brussel sprouts, broccoli, corn oil, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, radishes, rutabaga, soy and turnips. By cooking these vegetables, the depressing effect is decreased

*Factors suspected for causing hypothyroidism are: The artificial sweetener aspartame, mercury pollution, dental fillings containing mercury, fluoride and heavy metal pollution.

HOW CAN HYPOTHYROIDISM BE TREATED

For serious hypothyroidism caused by tissue destruction, external supplement of thyroid hormones is necessary.

When the condition is caused by lack of iodine in the diet, dietary changes and iodine supplements will be a part of the treatment.

Less serious, but painful hypothyroidism is sometimes also treated with hormone supplements. In these cases it is difficult to find the right dose, and treatment may result in hormone poisoning.

You can sometimes alleviate hypothyroidism by reducing the amount of food suspected for depressing the thyroid function: Brussel sprouts, broccoli, corn oil, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, radishes, rutabaga, soy, soy products and turnips. However, these food types are valuable in many ways, so it is probably not wise to cut them out totally. Also try to avoid artificial ingredients like the sweetener aspartame, conserving additives and fluoride.

Changing out mercury dental fillings and avoiding mercury or heavy metal exposure may help to ameliorate the condition.

You may also alleviate the condition by eating food that stimulates the thyroid function according to practical experience: Chia seed, dulse, fish from the ocean, flax seed, pumpkin seed, seaweed, coconut and brewer yeast.

You can find nutritional supplements to help for hypothyroidism. The compositions of these products vary:

*They may contain building materials that the thyroid uses to make its hormones, for example: iodine, acetyl-L-tyrosine or L-phenylalanine.

*They may also contain vitamins and minerals that stimulate the mechanism of hormone production by being a part of necessary enzymes, or by helping the absorption of the ingredients that hormones are made from, like: Magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper and vitamin E.

*They may furthermore contain constituents that stimulate tissue regeneration by being part of tissue building enzymes, and thus helping to restore a degraded thyroid, for example: Folic acid or folate, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid or pantothenate), B6 (pyridoxine), B12 (cyanocobalamin) and molybdenum.

Aerobic Exercise Benefits

January 29, 2011 · Posted in diets to lower cholesterol · Comment

I know some folks like to have a million and one exercises and I find that the root of this is usually because of an over reliance of isolation exercises.Isolation exercises are deceptive. They target an area of the body with laser focus and you can really feel the muscles working and burning. On the other hand, a compound exercise doesn’t typicaly have the same satisfying feel. Doing some sit ups or crunches really makes the abs burn. On the other hand a plank or a sand bag clean hardly makes the abs burn at all. It’s tough to know they are working as hard as they are with a compound movement so it’s only natural to gravitate towards an isolation move that gives such positive feedback. For those that already have circulation issues before the pregnancy and are wearing compression hose or support stockings, they may need to think about an increase in size. On the other hand, maternity pantyhose are one product that can provide relief for tired, swollen legs. Some types are available with a special, expandable panel over the abdomen. This helps to maintain general leg health and improves blood flow. An expandable waistband makes them comfortable to wear. Look for types that feature breathable and anti-microbial fabric.

Another advantage with circuit training is you finish your weight lifting workout much faster. You don’t have to stay at the gym as long. You can do a modified circuit workout if hogging up several machines is not possible. Many people break up their weight training sessions into body parts. If you are a beginner you may want to consider doing a full body workout all in one session. You should instead focus on building an intensive full body workout routine, that incorporates specific exercises that actually burn fat. Sure targeting your ab dominants or any other part of your body for that matter, does have its place, but only when incorporated into a strategic high intensity full body workout.

Another one of the benefits of golf exercises is to strengthen your core. This will ensure that your stance is correct, and will give you the strength that you need in order to hold the golf club properly. Arm lifts and leg lifts will help to make the core part of your body stronger, and will add great tone to your limbs. You can start by adding weights to your ankles; lie on your side and lift your legs up in sets of ten, then change sides to exercise the other leg.The previous exercise are the most efficient ways of getting your body to burn the fat. Exercises like basketball, tennis, golf, racquetball, house or yard work are good exercises but these exercises all have built in rest periods. You want a exercise that is continuous. These types of exercises will start to burn fat and the short intermittent exercises or activities will usually burn carbohydrates because of the short duration of the activity.Do not short cut your workout as even with as little as 12-20 minute aerobic workout you have some health benefits. With this little of a workout you will see a decreased blood pressure, decreased blood cholesterol, lower resting heart rate and a overall better feeling.

Foods to Avoid to Effectively Lose Weight

December 25, 2010 · Posted in diets to lower cholesterol · Comment

As much as there are diverse sources of food diet and meal plans which are good to eat for an effective weight loss, it is also important to become aware of foods to avoid as it can hinder one’s desire to lose weight.

Controlling your taste buds to crave for something so deliciously tempting may be hard to do. But control itself is the key to success. You need to get yourself blindfolded while you munch for something healthier and take away the no-no’s in your kitchen. Here are top 10 of the foods you need to sacrifice for the sake of weight loss:

  1. Processed foods – are foods that have been treated in an industrial way. These foods contain chemical additives and preservatives that trouble the natural process of the body’s digestion and elimination. Ex. Canned goods and hotdogs
  2. Fast foods – contain trans-fats and excessive calories. They may be delicious and easy to purchase for they are everywhere but they just do not suffice any natural ingredients that are healthy for you. Ex. French fries and cheeseburgers
  3. Deep fried foods – are foods cooked deep in high-cholesterol oil. This will not only put your weight loss plan to a halt but also provide your body risky chances of getting high blood. Ex. Potato chips and donuts
  4. Animal fat – contains saturated fats which are high in cholesterol and would not really help for a healthy weight loss. This can increase your blood level and pose heart disease. Ex. Pork chop
  5. White flour – holds nothing good for the body. This is just bleached and processed with preservatives that can cause imbalance to the digestive system. Ex. White bread
  6. Mayonnaise – are made with trans-fat oils, cholesterol-rich eggs and preservatives. This is commercially treated to stay long on the shelf. Although mayonnaise really makes your meal tasty, it would not help in your diet plan.
  7. Full-fat dairy – dairy products is good for the body because of its calcium content. But full fat dairies such as regular milk, cheese and butter contain too much fat like ones you eat on fast foods. Choose low or non-fat dairy products as substitute.
  8. Frozen foods – are easy-to-cook foods through the microwave or deep frying that contains too much preservatives and calories. These are also processed to maintain long life in the fridge. Ex. Chicken nuggets
  9. Soda – is full of too many empty calories and too much sugar which in no way give health benefit to the body. All you can get from soda is an upset tummy and rise of blood sugar level. Skip it.
  10. Caffeinated drinks – is highly concentrated with caffeine that brings negative effects to the body’s metabolism. It would hamper the body of its natural slimming process and hinder your desire for a quick weight loss. Ex. Coffee and tea

Acomplia Review: How it Works as a Diet Solution

December 9, 2010 · Posted in diets to lower cholesterol · Comment

Rimonabant or acomplia is an weight loss medication that uses Cannabinoid-1 Receptor Blockers (CB1). This Acomplia review focuses on how it works in your body and the other positive effects. Acomplia instigates weight loss by stopping the CB1 receptors found in the brain and the organs which is responsible for fat and glucose metabolism. These receptors are part of the endocannabinoid system or CSB, which has been identified to stimulate food desire and increase appetite (like the experience with marijuana). These receptors control a person’s craving; while the hypothalamus is in charge of varying a person’s energy and also balancing your intake of calories. The CB1 blockers are appetite suppressants that is able to stop the possibility of food cravings. Acomplia, or rimonabat also speeds up the user’s metabolism, thus controlling your energy levels and body weight. These show that acomplia (or rimonabat) is an effective diet method.
Aside from weight loss, Acomplia improves your body’s health. The medication is able to lower triglycerid levels and at the same time increase your HDL levels. Triglycerid is commonly known as the “unhealthy cholesterol; and HDL is your “good cholesterol”. At the same time, your blood sugar levels also get better, as it controls the breakdown of glucose in your body.

A study by the University of Rio de Janeiro confirms the effectiveness of Acomplia. The study says that the volunteers were successful in trimming down their waist, improve their blood pressure and improve their cholesterol levels. Around five or ten percent of their initial weight was reduced based on the clinical tests. The pill was formulated to be used as a supplement for overweight adults who are undergoing an exercise and diet program. In light of this, it shouldn’t be used on its own and is only effective when combined with a balanced life. Acomplia is ideal for male adults with approximately a 102 cm waist line and and 88 cm for women. Other studies show that this pill also assists in preventing cardiovascular diseases.

Clinical tests have proven that Acomplia is safe for the majority of people but it isn’t suggested for those with clinical depression, galactose intolerance, epilepsy and chronic kidney problems . At the same time, women who are breastfeeding or carrying a child should not take the medication.

It is normal for a new user to experience side effects as the pill causes a shift in your metabolism. Once the person’s body is able to adjust to the shifts, these effects will stop occurring. The suggested amount is 20 mg and must be used before eating breakfast. Anything over this amount will be harmful to the user’s body. Rimonabat or Acomplia must be kept in a cool, dry place. Do not leave it in the bathroom. If you’re overweight this Acomplia Review suggests you discuss the medication as one of your options.

Adding Cocoa Beans to Your Daily Diet

December 3, 2010 · Posted in diets to lower cholesterol · Comment

Commonly referred to as a “Super Food”, Cocoa beans contain a large amount of healthy nutrients your body needs. Cocoa beans are seeds from a cocoa tree, and they are the primary ingredient in chocolate. Including Cocoa beans in your daily diet is an easy way to give your body a healthy boost. Some benefits include:

Plenty of Antioxidants

Researchers agree that cocoa beans are one of the most natural, antioxidant-rich foods you can consume. In fact, in its natural form cocoa beans have three times the amount of antioxidants of green tea. Antioxidants promote healthy cholesterol, protect against cell damage, and may even help prevent certain types of cancers. Those are just a few examples. All around, antioxidants are extremely beneficial to the human body.

A Natural Antidepressant

Sometimes referred to as “Nature’s Antidepressant”, Cocoa beans contain three key neurotransmitters that promote a positive mood. Serotonin, dopamine and phenylethylamine all work together to keep your mental state happy. In addition to this, cocoa beans also contain monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, which allow the three neurotransmitters to circulate in your blood stream longer than they normally would.

Supports a Healthy Weight

Although research is thin in this area, it is generally believed that cocoa beans help promote weight-loss. This is due to the polyphenols contained in the beans, which may improve insulin sensitivity, thus helping you maintain a proper weight.

Promotes a Healthy Heart

It is a fact that cocoa beans have a positive impact on the cardiovascular system. Cocoa beans do this by lowering the “bad” cholesterol in your blood stream and raising the “good” cholesterol levels. Cocoa beans also contain magnesium, which keeps blood free of clots, and keeps your heart pumping blood efficiently.

When consuming cocoa beans, you have a couple options. Some people choose to eat them raw, and while this is undoubtedly the most beneficial way to eat them, it is also the most bitter. Dark chocolate is a far more enjoyable way to eat cocoa beans. It would be wise to purchase a bar that contains at least 70% cocoa, and that does not contain any milk, as milk would detract from your body’s ability to absorb the natural antioxidants.

Alternative Therapiey for Autism

December 1, 2010 · Posted in diets to lower cholesterol · Comment

Alternate Therapies for Autism
This page is designed to help you do research finding help and solutions that improve the autism symptoms. You can use this reference page to search further on many and various therapies that have helped others.  New products and theories are showing up all the time.
There are many different therapies that have helped many people with “mental problems”, ranging from ADD/ADHD/Autism to depression, and even schizophrenia.  Some (such as EEG Biofeedback  (aka Neurofeedback  (NFB)) or End Point Titration (EPT) or Hyperbaric (oxygen tanks), etc, that now have inexpensive alternates are not included.  Google these “names” if info is desired on them.
   1.  The newest and certainly the least expensive “brain training” method is the Neuroliminal Training (NT) system.  This has now been shown to be an excellent and inexpensive alternate to both the very expensive Neurofeedback (NFB) training, and Hyperbaric Oxygen.  Results are very similar to Neurofeedback  (both EEG and HEG BF).  For a fraction of the cost of those, it offers an affordable and much better alternative to Ritalin and other dangerous drugs for mid and low income families who simply cannot afford Neurofeedback or Hyperbaric.  Both NFB  and NT work to eliminate allergen affects causing mental problems of all types.  http://ADHD-Autism.com for more info.
   2.  Allergens are almost always part of all “brain problems”, There’s a simple and free (except for some detective work) way to detect them.  Even if you use the NT or NFB Training, this is a good idea!  Check out Dr Bate’s FREE Caveman Diet and pulse test at:  http://drbate.com/Ref/pulse.html
   3.  For the ADD to Autism continuum (as well as depression and schizophrenia), there is a good possibility that mercury used in infant or childhood vaccines (or other toxic minerals) may be the real underlying problem.  These mineral toxins MUST be chelated out of the body.  There are various old and new methods of doing this:
       a.  Vitamin C in large doses:  This has two advantages;  it’s relatively cheap, and it’s good for overall health.  In my former practice, I used it with excellent success in many schizophrenia cases.  In general, it is very safe, unless the patient has an allergy to corn (not that unusual).  For smaller children, I would recommend 1 gram (1000 mg) at each meal per 40 pounds per child.  Overdosing only causes diarrhea, and it might be necessary to work up to this amount if such occurs.  If a corn allergy is suspected, then use Calcium Ascorbate, either in powder or pill form.  I buy the cheapest form of Ascorbic acid from Cosco, but my wife (with corn allergy) has to use the Calcium Ascorbate.
       b.  Injecting chelating chemical:  A therapy where a chelating drug (EDTA) is injected into a vein for an hour or so in a clinic office.  This is also quite expensive.  Not recommended.
       c.  Zeolite in liquid form: A newer method taken by mouth (and relatively expensive).  This is actually a form of lava rock that is very porous, and this porosity attracts heavy metals (mercury, lead, copper, etc) binds to it, and carries it out via the urine/kidney pathway. The reports are excellent, but it’s marketed by a sort of MultiLevelMarketing (MLM) scheme that makes it more expensive. Base retail price is about $50, but if you become a distributor, it drops to $33 or so. You can get more details by Googling “zeolite”.
       d.  Glutathione Supplements:  There’s a (new to me) supplement specifically designed to raise Glutathione levels in the body.  Glutathione is a natural combination of amino acids that is a powerful anti-oxident with several other interesting features:
It’s a major part of the immune system often overlooked by scientists.
Glutathione detoxifies the body by taking poisons, including mercury and other toxic minerals out.  (Similar to chelation, but most other toxins as well as minerals.)
It’s not absorbed well when taken as a direct supplement.  This is important as there are many supplements that contain glutathione that are not generally effective.
Low levels of glutathione are found in all autistic children, as well as many other sick or toxic persons.  These low levels do not allow excretion well.  This explains why hair, blood, and urine tests of mercury (and other minerals) do not show accurately what is stored in the body.
Price of supplement program – $85 for a 28 day supply.  Again not cheap, but this seems to be worth the price if you can afford it.  For more details go to: http://maxgxl.com/brainadvance
    4.  There’s a company that advocates a special “Body Ecology Diet”,  This has had good success with autism and virtually all other health issues.  It includes many products designed to effectively make the human body work better and more efficiently.  It includes some very good probiotics as well as others that help get rid of yeast overgrowth & the “Leaky Gut Syndrome”.  Again, not cheap, but worth it, if it is affordable for your family.  For more information:  http://www.bodyecology.com
   5.  What do digestive enzymes have to do with ADD/ADHD and autism?   A “leaky” gut syndrome” produces more allergy/sensitivity, and enzymes with meals break down the food better lessening the need for the “leaky gut”.  This has helped many ADD/ADHD as well as autistic persons.
          a. There is a bulletin board sponsored by Kirkman Labs that has a forum on special digestive enzymes.  Join at: enzymesandautism-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
          b. Another company that has an excellent line of enzymes is New Beginnings.  In addition to the enzymes, they have a lot of Gluten/Casein Free Nutritional Supplements, and a “purified source” of cholesterol (see below). Info and catalogs at http://nbnus.com
   6.  At the recent Orlando conference, I also learned that many autistics have low cholesterol, and supplementing with two egg yolks a day may improve many symptoms.  This is certainly easy and cheap to try.  If the person has an allergy to eggs (not uncommon) then a “purified” cholesterol may be obtained from the New Beginnings supplier above that is non allergenic.
   7.  For autistic (and ADD/ADHD) children, there’s a lot of evidence that a gluten free and dairy free diet can help considerably.   Google gfcf for more info.  (The Caveman Diet above includes this and many more of the commonly allergenic foods.  Try it for a week or so, then switch to gfcf.)
   8.  The latest research also shows that supplementing with fish oil can dramatically improve the ADD-Autism set of problems.  I use the salmon fish oil from Our Health Co-op  (http://www.ourhealthcoop.com)  This web based health food store is one of the best for both quality and pricing.  (I have no financial interest in this company or Solgar, but I do buy several supplements from them.)
   9.  There’s a drug therapy called LDN (Low Dose Naltrexone).  While it is a drug, it seems that in low doses, it can significantly decrease many disease problems (symptoms) in autism, HIV/Aids, cancers, etc.  For more information  http://www.lowdosenaltrexone.org   Some good results for autistics have been reported.
  10.  Another new nutritional “therapy” consists of supplemental glyconutrients.  A company called Mannotech is marketing these by an MLM (which I hate), and they apparently are helping with some ADD-Autism symptoms.  For more details on glyconutrients – a new found essential nutrient – check out both Mannotech and glyconutrients by googling them.
  11.  There’s also a therapy technique called EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) that has also shown some good results with ADD/ADHD, depression, etc.  This was put together by Gary Craig, and his website containing lots of free and almost free information may be found at http://www.emofree.com
  12.  Some have had good results with NAET (Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique). However, results are mixed, and Dr Nambudripad has been unhappy with many practitioners who do not follow her technique carefully.  There is further information at  http://www.naet.com/subscribers/index_ns.html
  13.  There’s a system similar to NAET called Bioset.  There’s a book “Food Allergy Cure” by Dr. Ellen Cutler, which explains using Bioset to remove allergies.  This can also be done at home as the book explains “How To”.  Check your local library and see if they can order it for you, or you can probably get it from Amazon.com.  Google Bioset.
  14.  Don’t forget a very important way to improve all mental “diseases”.  Help to solve the “leaky  gut syndrome” by cleaning out the gut (http://drbate.com/Ref/gut.html), and by supplementing with a good vitamin/mineral regimen (http://drbate.com/vitmin.html.  This should be a first step.
  15. Finally, one of the oldest, cheapest & effective “remedies” of all – magnesium!  It’s been known for years as the “calming chemical”.  In our culture we seldom get enough and this deficiency may worsen many mental problems.  It’s safe as if you overdose, like vitamin C, you only get diarrhea!.  Milk of Magnesia and Epsom Salts (Magnesium Sulphate) are two very old good products that are often overlooked today . For autistic and ADHD children in particular, try baths using Epsom Salts.  It’s helped a lot of kids and adults.  I prefer Magnesium Citrate daily for supplemental use.  I get this from the Health Co-op mentioned above.
There is also a lot of free information on my “drbate.com” website, and you can get a free copy of the full book “The Health Revolution” by signing up for my free newsletter on that home page.
