In today’s Western society it’s much easier, and not to mention quicker, to spend a few bucks at the McDonald ‘s across the street than it is to make a satisfying dinner. In a world of Big Macs, KFC and Häagen-Dazs ice cream, who really wants to eat their spinach and celery sticks? As a result, however, our fat-filled diets have brought about an epidemic of heart disease , which has become North America’s No. 1 killer. Fortunately, over the years scientists and nutritionists have studied the foods that are good for the heart, and some of these might come as a surprise. So, here’s a list of the best heart foods that you should include in your diet, and maybe it will help you avoid a trip to the doctor’s. Oats Oats belong to a larger category of foods referred to as whole grains. Whole grains contain the entire kernel as opposed to refined grains that have been processed to remove the bran and the germ. While this process allows certain grains to last longer on store shelves, it also removes much of the good stuff like B vitamins , vitamin E , fiber, and antioxidants. Oats, in particular, as found in your morning oatmeal, contain a soluble fiber known as beta-glucan that decreases the total cholesterol in your blood as well as your low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. This is important because it is the LDL or “bad” cholesterol that’s responsible for heart attacks. Some studies that required people’s diets to be supplemented with oat bran showed a decrease in total cholesterol by as much as 18% while others have found a drop in LDL cholesterol by as much as 9%. In addition, whole grains have a low glycemic index, which is a measure of how high a food raises your blood sugar level. Foods with a low glycemic index have a clear health advantage, particularly in helping to prevent diabetes (a major risk factor for coronary heart disease). Next time you reach for that cereal bar for breakfast, maybe you should reconsider and make a bowl of oatmeal. Red wine Want to have your cake and eat it too? Then drink red wine. In moderation (4 to 8 ounces/day), red wine is cardio-protective. This effect comes from antioxidants found in red wine, particularly resveratrol. This compound found in grape extracts has several beneficial effects on the heart, including reducing LDL as well as total blood cholesterol. Moreover, resveratrol, as well as other polyphenols found in red wine, have been shown to reduce blood clots by inhibiting a component found in blood known as platelets. Similar to the action of aspirin, which is one of the mainstay therapies in heart attack prevention, red wine helps to prevent platelets from clumping together, which is a key event in coronary artery blockage. Our guide to the best heart foods continues…

What Conditions are Affected by an Anti-Inflammatory Diet?

There are more than 40 autoimmune diseases alone that are positively affected by adding anti-inflammatory foods to the diet. While many of these conditions are rare, it is the most common conditions that affect more people and thus these dietary changes could be the single, most important step toward better health.

Obesity and the Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Being obese or overweight is a fact for more than 2/3 of the people in the United States alone. While this country is most familiar with the negative health risks associated with being overweight, other countries are quickly increasing the numbers of their overweight and obese populations.

Being obese or overweight affects overall body health dramatically. The potential health risks include diabetes, coronary heart disease, high blood cholesterol, stroke and high blood pressure. The interesting thing is that all of these conditions are inflammatory in nature. When the body is overweight, it enters into a constant state of inflammation. Over time, health degrades and these health conditions result.

Choosing an anti-inflammatory diet can reduce weight and reduce the risk of contracting a weight related illness. Recent studies have linked obesity related diabetes, not to the weight, per se, but to the inflammation occurring in the body as a result of being overweight. Reduce the weight and pick up an anti-inflammatory diet and the diabetes may simply fade away.

Arthritis and the Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Another huge concern for the general population is arthritis. Severe cases can limit the use of hands, leg joints and knee joints to the point of being bed ridden or forced to use a cane or other ambulatory device. Arthritis is an auto-immune reaction in the body. This means the immune system reacts as if there is a foreign substance in the joints and inflames to protect the surrounding tissues. Over time, the chronic inflammation can lead to tissue degradation and further health problems.

An anti-inflammatory diet can decrease the inflammation of the joints to significantly prolong the time the affected joints can survive before long term effects result. In this case, the anti-inflammatory diet may not cure the arthritis, but it can reduce pain and connective tissue damage. Tissue damage from arthritis is not reversible, so preventing that damage from occurring is important to overall health. Significant tissue damage as a result of inflammation can leave the joints with no protective barrier between bones. Eventually, bones scrape on bones and replacement surgery may be necessary.

Saving a Life With an Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Asthma is a dangerous condition. The illness is characterized by an acute inflammation of the bronchial tubes that reduces air flow to the lungs. In some cases, this inflammation can lead to death. As is the case with arthritis, asthma cannot be cured by an anti-inflammatory diet, but reducing the acuteness of the reaction may mean the difference between life and death.

Choosing anti-inflammatory foods whether to lose weight or protect health and life is a good choice for everyone. Chances are someone you know is affected by inflammation on a daily basis. This inflammation can cause more than just uncomfortability – it can cause prolonged illness and even death. Dietary changes are a very simple way to reduce that risk.

Another great supplemnt to add to your diet is Nopalea.

The countries like the United States are suffering with a number of death cases due to heart disease every year. The term of this disease has many types and segments that generally affect the heart. Some of the heart disease that are very common like heart disease due to high blood pressure , Coronary Heart Disease , Ischemic Heart Disease , Tachycardia , heart murmurs etc. The heart diseases like the vascular heart disease, colonial heart disease and others can be cured completely. The main cause of a heart disease is mental stress, high blood pressure or hypertension, high level of cholesterol, overweight and/or obesity and many cases the heart disease also occurs due to stress. The habit of excessive smoking or a heavy intake of alcohol is also a great reason of heart diseases. The occurrence of heart disease is also affected by gender and sex. It also occurs due to hereditary issues. In many cases, it has been observed that if in a family , one of the parents are suffering with any sort of heart disease, the children can also be affected. Nowadays, the occurrence of heart disease also has roots in the growing environmental changes and pollutions and other toxins. Many of the stressful situations help to increase the blood clotting in the heart and also lead to hypertension. Some of the sex hormones are also responsible for a heart disease. The women who are in the age of sixty-five or seventy or in the menopausal condition face a drastic change in the sex hormones and have severe kinds of sickness in the heart.

The PSA tests are done especially in case of a cancer in the prostrate in males. The PSA is actually a type of protein, which is known as Prostrate-specific antigen. Antigen is manufactured in the prostrate. The test actually measures the level of this type of protein in the human blood. Thus, this test is done by taking a blood sample. The PSA medically is also known as tumor marker or biological marker. The US Food and Drugs Administration or FDA also has approved the medical use of PSA test. In the test process, the physical experts take blood from the veins, usually from the elbows. Here, the medical experts first clean the place from where he is going to take the blood and the enfold the upper portion of the arm with a band, then he gives pressure on the affected part to let the veins swell with blood and then he takes a particular amount of blood from the body. The medical experts say that the test can be useful if done including a Digital rectal Exam or DRE, especially in case of a prostrate cancer in those patients who are either 50 years old or more than that. In the DRE test process, the medical experts verify the prostrate gland the rectal wall to check the blisters and other abnormal growths. The FDA has also approved that the PSA test also can be useful if a person has a case of re-occurrence of prostrate cancer.

The person who suffers with a high level of blood sugar is diagnosed with diabetes. The condition of diabetes can also interrupt in the functioning of other body parts. The reason of the various complications of diabetes has its roots in some of the other body functions and some of the medicinal affects on the body. It is very widespread in the United States. Many of the patients do not even know that have the sickness. This is a sickness where the human body faces problem to keep a balance between the sugars and is not able to use insulin in an adequate amount. The insulin is a type of hormone, which helps the body to convert the level of starches, sugar and many of the other food into energy to boost the other body cycles. If a person has an invariable level of high amount of glucose, it is been said that the person has diabetes. The diabetic person will also have difficulties in the functions of eyes, heart, feet and even on the liver and kidney. The diabetes Mellitus mainly cause the condition of diabetes. The sickness generally is of three types, Type 1 diabetes, and Type 2 and Gestational diabetes.

Ayinde O. Chase – AHN News Editor

Norwich, United Kingdom (AHN) – People who take regular exercise could reduce their risk of developing nearly two dozen physical and mental health conditions. Researchers say exercise could even reduce the risk of developing some cancers and dementia.

“Although the focus of my study was on men’s health, the messages on physical activity are relevant to both sexes and all age groups,” said physiotherapist and lecturer Leslie Alford from the University of East Anglia.

Health benefits identified by the review include:

Regular moderate to intense physical activity is associated with decreased risk of coronary heart disease and ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke.

A growing body of evidence suggests that increasing physical activity can also reduce the risk of certain types of cancers, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, depression, obesity and high blood pressure.

Evidence of the beneficial effects of physical activity in the primary prevention and management of cancer is growing. There is an association between higher levels of physical activity and lower cancer death rates.

Walking or cycling for at least an half an hour a day is associated with a reduction in cancer. When this is increased to an hour, cancer incidence falls by 16 per cent.

Evidence is mixed when it comes to specific cancers. Research shows a strong relationship between increased physical activity and reduced colon cancer in both sexes. In addition, men who are more active at work – not just sitting at a desk – have lower rates of prostate cancer.

Other cancer studies show that physical activity after diagnosis can aid recovery and improve outcomes.

Studies have also shown that men who are physically active are less likely to experience erection problems.

There is growing evidence that physical activity could decrease the risk of dementia in the elderly.

Alford said to gain maximum health benefits, people should exercise, not smoke, eat a healthy diet and have a body mass index of less than 25.

“The more of these healthy traits an individual has, the less likely they are to develop a range of chronic disorders,” the researcher said. “Even if people can’t give up smoking and maintain a healthy weight, they can still gain health benefits from increasing the amount of regular exercise they take.”

Heart disease is a disorder that affects the ability of the heart to function normally. The common types of heart disease are coronary heart disease, pulmonary heart disease, ischaemic heart disease, hereditary heart disease, inflammatory heart disease, hypertensive disease and valvular disease.

The common symptoms of heart disease are heaviness or pressure on the chest, shortness of breath, irregular or fast heartbeats, dizziness, nausea, excessive heart palpitations and back or shoulder pain. If you encounter any of these problems, it would be wise to consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Heart disease is primarily a disease of poor and sedentary lifestyle, and can be largely preventable through risk factor awareness and modification. The best way to prevent heart disease is to control blood pressure and have LDL cholesterol at low levels. You can attain these goals by making appropriate diet changes and even by taking medications if so recommended by your doctor.

Regular exercise can also reduce the risks of heart disease. Making change in some habits, such as walking to work, can make you healthier. Walking is perhaps the easiest and healthiest way to make you physically active and healthy. In order to prevent heart disease, you need to make changes in your diet, together with reducing excess weight and maintaining blood sugar levels as well as taking nutritional supplements that are suggested by your health experts.

The dietary modifications you need to make to lower cholesterol are restrict cheese intake, fat milk and butter, choose lean cuts of meat and remove all visible fat, eat skinless chicken, fish or beans, and do not consume pasties, chips and cakes.

Grapes are recommended for heart patients because, being soft, slimy and cold, grapes have a soothing and calming effect on the heart muscles. Another useful home remedy is to prepare a decoction by boiling approx. 1 to 2 tsp dried ginger. Take it warm, once or twice a day.

A sweet jelly of apple and carrot is also beneficial and act as a heart tonic. The patient can also take approx. 1 to 2 tsp fresh betel juice extracted by pounding betel leaves. A moderate intake of ripe mangoes strengthens the heart and gives relief from palpitations. Take 3 to 5 grams of the powdered seeds of lotus twice, to soothe and calm the heart.

Meditation, pranayama and regular walking for 1 to 2 hours in the morning are also helpful in making you and your heart healthier. Good sleep, fresh air, rest and peace of mind are also necessary for heart patients.

This article explains five important things that you need to know about high cholesterol.

This article explains five important things that you need to know about high cholesterol.

1. Your High Cholesterol Can Be The Death Of You

High cholesterol is the most significant risk factor for coronary heart disease. What this means to you is that if your cholesterol level is high, it’s likely that you will eventually be diagnosed with coronary heart disease, and it may even result in your death. To prevent this, find out now whether you have high cholesterol. If your cholesterol level is high, you can take steps to lower it.

2. Your Body Does Need Some Cholesterol

The body uses cholesterol for many purposes, including the creation of cells, vitamins, and hormones. All animals, including humans, have cholesterol in their bodies. Without cholesterol, your body could not function properly. However, too much cholesterol can be hazardous to your health.

3. How Much Cholesterol Do You Have? How Much Is Too Much?

If you don’t know your blood cholesterol level, you need to find it out. Your doctor can order a blood test that will measure the cholesterol in your blood. Blood cholesterol is reported in mg/dL, or milligrams per deciliter. So if your cholesterol level is 800, that means you have 800 milligrams of cholesterol in every tenth of a liter of blood. It also means you are at grave risk for coronary heart disease!

Most doctors now agree that a total cholesterol level below 200 is most desirable. A level over 240 is thought to place you at very high risk for coronary heart disease. A level between 200 and 240 is considered moderately risky and you should probably try to lower it.

4. There’s Cholesterol. And Then, There’s Cholesterol

The total cholesterol count is made up of three different kinds of cholesterol: LDL cholesterol, also known as bad cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, or good cholesterol, and VLDL cholesterol (which isn’t considered that important). Doctors recommend that you keep your LDL cholesterol level below 100 mg/dL, and HDL cholesterol level above 40 mg/dL.

5. You Can Reduce Your High Cholesterol

If your total blood cholesterol level is too high, your first priority should be to reduce it to a level below 240, or better yet, below 200. If you have done that and your LDL level is still above 100, you should try to reduce that level to below 100. Finally, you should try to increase your HDL level to above 40.

To reduce total cholesterol, doctors and nutritionists recommend eating less fat, eating more of certain foods (like oatmeal, for example) and getting more aerobic cardiovascular exercise.

Cholesterol is the fat-like substance, which is an important ingredient for life. The human body contains about 100 g of cholesterol. The human body itself manufactures its required cholesterol, and any cholesterol that comes from diet is extra — and it’s harmful.

Benefits of body cholesterol -

Most of the cholesterol in the body is included in the membranes from which cells formation takes place. It is also the starting ingredient for the synthesis of the steroid hormones such as progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, cortisol and mineralocorticoids.

Cholesterol is also the originator from which the body synthesizes Vitamin D.

Cholesterol helps in the synthesis of bile acids in the liver. This is required for the absorption of fat from the contents of the intestine. The liver synthesizes about 1500 – 2000 mg of new cholesterol each day, from the products of fat metabolism.

What is high blood cholesterol? Is it risky?

High blood cholesterol termed as hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and some types of stroke. Too much cholesterol in the blood leads to development of fatty deposits in the blood vessels that supply the heart and other parts of the body. These deposits make it difficult for enough blood to flow through the arteries, and the heart may not get as much oxygen-rich blood as it needs, which increases the chances of a heart attack

(atherosclerosis). Decreased blood flow to the brain can also cause a cerebral stroke.

Healthy levels of cholesterol -

A person’s total blood cholesterol will fall into any one of these categories:

1)	Desirable — Less than 200 mg/dL

2)	Borderline high risk — 200-239 mg/dL

3)	High risk — 240 mg/dL and over – risk of developing coronary heart disease.

What is HDL and LDL?

Cholesterol is transported through the blood attached to proteins, known as lipoprotein. The two main types of lipoproteins are:

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) – “bad” cholesterol that builds up in the walls of the arteries, making them hard and narrow.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) – “good” cholesterol that picks up excess cholesterol and takes it back to the liver.

Total cholesterol is the sum of HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and 20% of the triglyceride value.

It is important to be aware of the fact that -

1	high LDL values are bad – higher the chance of getting a heart disease

2	high HDL values are good – lower the chance of getting a heart disease.

Thus, cardiac risk ratio for an individual = total cholesterol divided by HDL cholesterol

A cardiac risk ratio greater than 7 is a danger sign.

What factors cause a high LDL and low HDL level in the body?

1)	Unhealthy lifestyle habits of an individual such as lack of physical activity, being overweight.

2)	Faulty eating habits. High intake of saturated fats, animal protein, butter, cheese, fried foods all lead to high cholesterol.

3)	Other factors that play a role in high cholesterol include genetic composition which restricts cells from removing LDL cholesterol from the blood efficiently or cause the liver to produce too much cholesterol. This is regardless of a person’s saturated fat and cholesterol dietary intake.

4)	Smoking, alcoholism, tobacco – as it damages the walls of the blood vessels, making them prone to accumulate fatty deposits.

5)	High blood pressure as increased pressure on the artery walls damages arteries, leading to speedy accumulation of fatty deposits.

6)	Diabetes contributes to high LDL cholesterol and low HDL cholesterol. High blood sugar also damages the lining of the arteries.

Cholesterol Treatment and prevention -

1)	Lifestyle changes help improve the cholesterol level. Eat a healthy diet, do regular physical activity and avoid smoking/drinking.

2)	Lose excess weight. Plan a daily exercise regime such as swimming, walks, or any other sport.

3)	Eat heart friendly foods

4)	Choose healthier fats such as monounsaturated fats. Almonds, olive, peanut and walnuts are good sources of healthy fat.

5)	Limit cholesterol intake – no more than 300 mg of cholesterol per day — or less than 200 mg if you have heart disease.

6)	Eat whole grains, whole wheat flour.

7)	Consume lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, as they are rich in dietary fibre, which help lower cholesterol. Consume less of animal protein, and more of fish which is rich in omega – 3 fatty acids

7)	Quit smoking and drinking

In spite of the above, if LDL remains high, the doctor may prescribe some medication or combination of medication depending on various factors, such as age, current health, risk factors, and possible side effects.

Home Remedies for Cholesterol:

*	Coriander seeds are beneficial in lowering blood cholesterol. In 1 glass of water, add 2 tablespoons of coriander seeds and boil. Drink this mixture two times in a day. This is a good Home Remedy for Cholesterol

Having a high cholesterol level has become a very serious problem for many people today. This has been credited to a majority of the population getting accustomed to a diet rich in fats, bad habits such as smoking and leading a sedentary lifestyle. And because of high cholesterol levels, more and more people are finding themselves at an increased risk of developing coronary heart disease as well as stroke and heart attack.

Heart disease is the number one cause of death for most people in the developed countries around the world. Having a high level of blood cholesterol has been linked to the increase of the incidence of heart disease and has become a grave cause of concern.

The only good news to this fact is that developing heart disease is highly preventable. All it takes is for one to be able to follow a healthier lifestyle. The path to such a lifestyle is trying to lower one’s cholesterol level. Although there are already several drugs available that will help an individual reduce body cholesterol levels, this is usually reserved for more high risk patients in need of drastic decreases in their cholesterol levels. There are also natural ways readily available for anyone looking forward to lowering their own cholesterol to normal and healthy levels.

One of the natural ways of lowering cholesterol levels is through diet. Following a low cholesterol diet day in and day out can be very effective in trying to control and maintain a normal cholesterol level. This would mean eating low cholesterol foods such as soy products, vegetables and fruits.

High fiber foods are also known to help in the fight to lower cholesterol. Regular exercise is also a good habit to develop if you are really intent in trying to lower your cholesterol levels. Exercise helps in increasing HDL or “good” cholesterol in the body as well as strengthens your heart muscle, helps keep your blood pressure at normal and even helps you in shedding of those excess pounds.

There are also several natural supplements that will be able to help you lower your cholesterol levels. Taking B-complex vitamins, specifically Niacin, has been known to help lower blood cholesterol in the body. supplements fortified with Lecithin can also help in lowering your cholesterol as it enables excess fat and cholesterol to be dispersed in the water instead of building up in the arteries.

There are other natural ways of lowering cholesterol levels available today. All it will take is some research and talking to your doctor about how to effectively follow a lifestyle that will enable you to lower cholesterol the natural way.

There has been a substantial increase in people having high cholesterol levels. It has been proven in many studies that an unhealthy increase in blood cholesterol levels can lead or be associated with the development of heart disease. High cholesterol levels can also increase the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death among people living in industrialized societies such as the US. The increasing incidence of high cholesterol levels in people living in this part of the world can often be contributed to a high saturated fat diet, smoking and leading a sedentary lifestyle.

There are several dugs now available that is being used to treat unhealthy cholesterol levels in people. Most popular of these is the HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor or what is more simply known as Statins. This group of cholesterol lowering drugs come in different name drugs and is increasingly being used in order to help high risk patients drastically lower their cholesterol levels. Statins can also increase the levels of HDL or “good” cholesterol.

Although statins and other known drugs being used to lower cholesterol levels have been proven to be very effective, there are also other ways available for people to lower their cholesterol levels without the use of such drugs. One of these is trying to lead a more active lifestyle. Physical activity and exercise is an important part of several low cholesterol therapies that aim to reduce bad cholesterol levels. Regular exercise can also help in reducing blood pressure, excess weight as well as decrease the diabetes risk.

Following a low cholesterol diet can also help a lot in trying to decrease high cholesterol levels. Scientists have found that a low cholesterol diet can help decrease cholesterol levels by as much as 29 percent in one month. This suggests that a combination diet can also be as effective as drugs like statins used to treat people with high cholesterol levels. It has also been established that eating low cholesterol and high fiber foods can cut individual cholesterol level by seven percent.

A recommended diet that can help people avoid developing coronary heart disease include consuming non-hydrogenated or unprocessed fats, eating a rich diet of soy protein, nuts and fiber rich foods such as oats and barley. Increased consumption of Omega-3 fats from fish and other plant sources can also have a positive effect in any low cholesterol diet as well as a healthy amount of fruits and vegetables.
