Contact lenses: Look into my eyes
Biotechnology: Smart contact lenses exploit the unusual characteristics of the eye to diagnose disease, deliver drugs and more besides
EYES can reveal an awful lot about somebody. Look into someone’s eyes and you can tell if he is happy or sad, truthful or insincere, sober or drunk. By peering deeper still, ophthalmologists are even able to gauge a person’s health, spotting far more than just conditions that affect the eye itself: hypertension and brain tumours can also be diagnosed by examining the retina. Eyes are in many respects windows on the body, even if they are not quite windows on the soul.
And now contact lenses, normally used to bring the outside world into focus, are making it possible to peer back in through these windows. The idea of “smart” contact lenses that can superimpose information on the wearer’s field of view has been around for a while, but contact lenses are also being developed that use embedded sensors and electronics to monitor disease and dispense drugs. Such devices may eventually be able to measure the level of cholesterol or alcohol in your blood and flash up an appropriate warning. …

Frankie Valli performs in Stamford benefit concert
share: digg facebook twitter Oh what a night it was at the Palace Theatre Friday as Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons played hit after hit and had the crowd dancing in the aisles. The annual Gala Benefit and Concert raised money for Dana’s Angels Research Trust, a nonprofit organization that funds research for Niemann-Pick type C, a fatal, cholesterol storage disease affecting children. After meeting the Marella family, who started DART and have two children afflicted with the disease, Kathie Lee said she’d often think of them and the injustice of what was happening to their daughter. Regis Philbin joined Kathie Lee on stage for a live auction of tickets to meet Rihanna, a day on a sailboat, dinner at Rao’s in New York City, a trip to Turks and Caicos, and dinner at the home of actor Chaz Palminteri. D.J. Scott Shannon of WPLJ introduced Valli, saying he’s been performing for five decades, has had numerous top 40 hits, sells out concerts everywhere and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Valli opened with “Dawn,” then continued with hits such as “My Eyes Adored You,” “Who Loves You,” “Oh What a Night,” “Sherry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Bye Bye Baby,” “Rag Doll,” and “Let’s Hang On.” Prior to the show, there was a cocktail hour and silent auction, where celebrities and politicians mixed with the guests.

Safflower oil may keep heart disease away
Ohio, United States (AHN) – Daily intake of safflower oil could help keep away heart disease in certain women, according to a new study.
The Ohio State University researchers said that a daily dose of the common cooking oil for 16 weeks could improve good cholesterol, blood sugar, insulin sensitivity and inflammation in obese postmenopausal women who have type-2 diabetes.
The same researchers almost two years ago said safflower oil reduced abdominal fat and increased muscle tissue in the same group of women after 16 weeks of daily supplementation.
The researchers said in a statement that their findings suggest safflower oil could be recommended as a safe way to lower cardiovascular disease risk, and not just in the group studied, but also for the general popularion.
“I believe these findings suggest that people consciously make sure they get a serving of healthy oil in their diets each day – maybe an oil and vinegar dressing on a salad, or some oil for cooking. And this recommendation can be extended to everyone,” Martha Belury, a professor of human nutrition at Ohio State, and the study’s lead author, said in a statement.
A report on the study appears in the journal Clinical Research.

Moderate alcohol consumption linked to healthy hearts
Calgary, Canada (AHN) – Two reports came out this week linking moderate alcohol consumption with significantly lower risks of developing heart disease.
The two reports from the University of Calgary, both published in the British Medical Journal, concluded that people who drink in moderation are 14 to 25 percent less likely to develop heart disease than those who don’t drink at all.
One of the studies says the reason is likely because alcohol raises a person’s high density lipoprotein cholesterol, or so-called “good cholesterol.” This has a protective effect on the heart.
The researchers acknowledged that previous research linked moderate drinking with reduced heart disease risk, but they said in a statement that those studies were out-of-date and needed updating.
The researchers also stressed moderation. This means about one glass of wine, beer or other alcoholic beverage a day for women and about two for men.

What is The Acai Berry? Research, Scams, And Potential Health Benefits.
What is the Acai Berry? Research, Scams, and Potential Health Benefits. The acai berry is a grape-like fruit harvested from South American palm trees recently popularized as a dietary supplement. Acai is rich in polyphenol antioxidants (also found in wine) which are known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer, as well as potential weight loss benefits. Unfortunately, false acai products and scams run rampant online, with few guides as to which products are actually safe and viable. Being an informed buyer by reading product reviews before buying an acai product is a wise investment of your time and money. What is an Acai Berry? The acai berryis the fruit of the açaí (or aqai) palm, a palm tree native to swamps and floodlands in Central and South America. The drupe is dark in color, a purple that is almost black, and is nominally smaller than an average grape. The fruit has been a dietary staple to the native tribes of the Brazilian Amazon for generations. What are Acai’s Health Benefits?
Acai berry health benefits: Acai’s claim to fame as a weight loss superfruit and dietary supplement is based on the berry’s concentration of polyphenol antioxidants, olecic acid, proteins, iron, and aspartic and glutamic acids. The benefits of antioxidants are well-known, as clinical studies on human daily consumption of antioxidant-rich items such as red wine and pomegranate showed a direct correlation with lowered risk of heart and neurodegenerative diseases. Particular polyphenols offer their own added benefits, such as resveratrol. This polyphenol is an anti-cancer that inhibits growth of mammalian tumors and significantly lowers blood sugar. Polyphenol antioxidants are currently being researched as a preventive treatment for peripheral artery disease. Oleic acid helps boost memory and is the compound in olive oil that causes a reduction in blood pressure, known as hypotension. When combined, aspartic and glutamic acids are classified as an amino acid, necessary for the growth and development of the human body. Acai has a concentration of 8% amino acids of the total dry weight of the berry. The acai berry also has nominal amounts of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and beta-Sitosterol. Beta-Sitosterol reduces blood levels of cholesterol, and has also been used to treat high blood cholesterol, prostatic carcinoma and breast cancer.
Acai Berry Scams Due to the overwhelming popularity of acai berry juices and related supplements, and the relatively scarce information regarding the actual intrinsic value of the fruit itself, acai berry scams have become infamous. Unethical marketing tactics used by some online retailers have tarnished the reputation of an otherwise potent herbal supplement, and make proper research and acai product reviews an absolute necessity for purchasing an acai-related herbal supplement. What We Look for in Acai Products. At Acai Berry.org, we recommend Acai-Balance as one of the most trustworthy acai products available online.
Aside from the actual acai extract, Acai-Balance is fortified with pomegranate and green tea extract, which are also rich in polyphenol antioxidants. Pomegranate juice has been tested in human pilot studies to effectively reduce heart disease factors that are shared steps in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. This includes LDL oxidation, macrophage oxidative status, and foam cell formation. Pomegranate juice was also shown to reduce systolic blood pressure by inhibiting serum angiotensin-converting enzyme in hypertensive patients. Pomegranate extracts have antibacterial effects against dental plaque, and have been shown to inhibit the proliferation of human breast cancer cell in a test tube. Green tea consumption is associated with reduced heart disease and can significantly lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer as well as beneficially impact bone density, cognitive function, dental cavities, and kidney stones. Thus, the most reassuring aspect of an acai product is not simply the supplement’s acai content, but the validity of the health benefits of the other key ingredients included in acai products. For this reason, Acai Berry.org offers detailed ingredient information for each product we review
