Middle Aged High Cholesterol Not Linked With Alzheimer’s Risk
Baltimore, MD, United States (AHN) – Having high cholesterol during middle age is not a risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s disease later in life in women, according to a new study.
Researchers led by Johns Hopkins University did say, however, that women whose cholesterol levels decline from middle age to old age have a two-and-a-half times greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s than those whose cholesterol stayed the same or increased over the years.
Later in life, women with slightly higher body mass index, higher levels of cholesterol and higher blood pressure tend to be healthier overall than those whose weight, cholesterol and blood pressure are too low, the researchers said.
They warned, though, that high cholesterol levels are linked to cardiovascular disease and other serious illnesses. They recommended people keep their cholesterol in check through diet, exercise and medication.
A report on the study is published in the online edition of the journal Neurology.
