Jean Alexandre helps Real Salt Lake blank slumping Vancouver
Sandy, UT, United States (AHN Sports) – Real Salt Lake, coming off a rare home loss last week, bounced back into the winners’ column behind the sterling effort of Jean Alexandre in a 2-0 rout of the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps Saturday night at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Alexandre, switched from midfielder to forward due to a number of injuries and international call-ups, opened up the scoring in the 32nd and set up the other RSL goal in the second half for his first career MLS goal and assist.
The 24-year-old Alexandre, who gradually adapted to his current position, collected a nifty Kyle Beckerman feed and maneuvered through traffic into the penalty area before slotting the ball home past Vancouver goalkeeper Joe Cannon.
In the 79th, Alexandre set up Fabian Espindola for the insurance goal.
It marked the first win in the past four league fixtures for RSL, which saw its 29-match home unbeaten streak halted by Seattle Sounders FC in its previous match.
Real Salt Lake, determined to get back into its winning ways after that rare home loss last week at Rio Tinto, outplayed the hapless Whitecaps on both ends of the field by compiling a total of 24 shots while putting eight of those on goal.
Vancouver tallied just seven shots overall. The expansion Whitecaps have not won in 13 matches since taking their first MLS game against Toronto FC.
RSL (6-2-2) is expected to ride on the momentum when it meets Columbus Wednesday. Vancouver (1-6-6) will attempt to snap its losing streak next Saturday when it plays Seattle in its MLS tilt.

Gulf investors grow nervous as unrest reaches closer to home
Manama, Bahrain David Rosenberg – Investors in the Gulf region are getting the jitters as the turmoil in Bahrain brings closer to home the political risk enveloping the Middle East.
Dubai’s stocks dropped to the lowest level in almost six months on Monday, with the index shedding 1.3 percent to 1516.43. The Tadawul All Share Index in Saudi Arabia slipped 0.6 percent and Qatar’s QE Index fell 0.8 percent, bringing its total loss since mid-January to 8 percent.
Bahrain’s marker declined 0.4 percent.
Bahrain was calmer on Monday even as protestors gathered again at Pearl Square, the center of the unrest in the country. At least seven people were killed and hundreds injured in clashes with security personnel in the previous week. In Kuwait, protestors representing the country’s 100,000 stateless residents also took the streets demanding citizenship.
Mass protests have forced the leaders of Tunisia and Egypt to step down and are posing threats to the rulers of Libya and Yemen, sparked by a combination of political repression and economies that have failed to deliver jobs or rising standards of living. But the Gulf had been spared any unrest and even benefited as oil prices rose.
“Coming into the new year, people were pretty optimistic,” Akram Annous, Middle East and North Africa strategist at Al Mal Capital in Dubai, told The Media Line. Oil prices were climbing, governments around the region were slated to spend billions in infrastructure development and Dubai was emerging from its debt woes “Then you got hit with his unexpected event …which has thrown a wrench into everyone’s model.”
Gulf stock markets were briefly laid low two weeks ago at the peak of the unrest in Egypt, but investors rapidly determined that the turmoil was unlikely to reach the shores of the Gulf, where oil profits shield the economies from inflation and poverty. That view is now being upset.
Bahrain’s sovereign credit ratings were cut on Monday by Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services, which warned that the rankings may be lowered further. S&P reduced the country’s long-term rating to A-minus, the fourth-lowest investment grade, the short-term rating to A-2 and placed the debt on its Creditwatch with negative outlook.
“We expect the demonstrations that have taken place over the past month will persist, despite the government’s use of force to clear the protesters from central Manama,” S&P said.
Debt insurance costs for Middle Eastern sovereign debt continued to rise on Monday, with Bahrain’s five-year credit default swaps eight basis points (bps) higher at a new 18-month high of 305 bps. Dubai’s rose nine bps to 440.
Nevertheless, most analysts said they were optimistic that the Gulf region would remain calm.
“In Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, you won’t have national or popular revolt. People are for the most part content. The expat population is much larger and they are guests,” Theodore Karasik, director for research and development, at the Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis in Dubai, told The Media Line. “Only in Saudi and Bahrain do you have this Sunni-Shiite issue.”
The countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council — Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) — are all ruled by monarchs who tolerate little dissent. But they are also very wealthy, and their rulers have acted to ensure their economies provide jobs, schools and health facilities.
Qatar, with an indigenous population of just 850,000 and some of the world’s biggest oil and gas reserves, has a per capita gross domestic product of $145,000, the highest in the world.
Bahrain, whose per capita GDP is just over $40,000, has little oil of its own but has led the way in developing a diversified economy. A quarter of its GDP is generated by financial services and it is home to the world’s biggest aluminum smelter. But Bahrain is an exception to the general demographic rule of the region in that the majority of its population is Shiite Muslims who feel disenfranchised and face discrimination in access to jobs and services, while its ruler is a Sunni.
Saudi Arabia, with a population of almost 26 million and a $620 billion economy, also has a Shiite minority accounting for as much as a fifth of its population and concentrated in its oil-rich eastern province. But Annous said he doubted the kingdom was at risk for the same kind of upheavals.
“What’s happening in Bahrain is unique to Bahrain 100 percent,” Annous said. “It’s a much more complex situation in Saudi though. I don’t think it’s fair to draw comparisons.”
But Karasik warned that if the unrest in Bahrain continues, it risks spreading to Saudi Arabia, which is a key ally of the U.S. and the West in the confrontation with Iran over the latter’s nuclear program and its bid to become a regional power.
“The collapse of Bahraini leadership would open another Pandora’s box that has dramatic implications for the style of governance in the GCC as well as the strategic relations the GCC states have with the West,” Karasik said.

Study: Home dialysis as good as hospital treatment
Toronto, Ontario, Canada (AHN) – A study by St. Michael’s Hospital has concluded that home dialysis is as effective as treatments done in the hospital, and much lighter on the pocket.
Home treatment costs $20,000 to $30,000 less, which would translate into savings of up to $516 million if 17,200 kidney patients who underwent hospital dialysis from 2007 had treatments at home, the study found. The data is based on records of the Canadian Institute for Health Information, which were analyzed by St. Michael’s researchers led by Dr. Jeffrey Perl, a kidney specialist.
Perl pointed out that kidney patients who had their dialysis done at home or the hospital have the same 33 percent death rates during the course of the study. However, he admitted not all kidney patients are suitable for home-based treatment.
In home-based dialysis, or peritoneal dialysis, patients are injected with cleansing fluids through a catheter tube to removed toxins from the blood. The fluids are drained several times a day. In hospital-based dialysis or hemodialysis, the patient’s blood is removed from the body, filtered and then returned minus the toxins.
Only 18 percent of kidney patients have their dialysis done at home and their number is going down, even if it saves patients time and even allow some of them to hold jobs.
For kidney failure patients lucky enough, the better alternative to dialysis is to find an organ donor match More potential kidney donors were added to the Living Donor Paired Exchange pool after Quebec signed up in the exchange on October.
The exchange started in January 2009 as a partnership between the Canadian Blood Services and three Canadian provinces. In less than two years all Canadian provinces have signed up, with Quebec becoming the latest to join.
There are about 35,000 Canadians suffering from kidney ailments, with 3,000 of them on the waiting list for an organ transplant. The medical procedure saves the health care system up to $40,000 a year in treatments and medication.

Home Remedies And Natural Cures For High Blood Pressure
Arteries are the vessels through which the blood is carried to all the parts of the body from the heart. Blood pressure is a force of blood against the wall of the arteries. In high blood pressure heart requires a lot of strength to pump the blood to the arteries. The heart pumps out the blood into the arteries each time it beats. When there is a contraction of the heart the highest is the blood pressure. It is known as systolic pressure. Between the beats the heart is relaxed and the blood pressure falls, it is called diastolic pressure. When systolic pressure is equal to or greater than 140 mm and diastolic pressure is equal to or greater than 90 mm in adults it is referred to high blood pressure.

How to Reduce Cholesterol Using Home Remedies
There are two types of blood cholesterol: Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and High-density lipoproteins (HDL). LDLs are bad because they are the ones responsible for deposit of plaque on the arteries walls. Deposit of plaque reduces the diameter of the artery and thereby restricts flow of blood through it. Therefore it can increase the risk of heart disease. HDLs are good because they remove cholesterol from arteries walls and carry it back to the liver to be excreted. Therefore HDLs in the blood can decrease the risk of heart disease.
Avoid high cholesterol foods; it can cause increased levels of low density lipoproteins (LDL) that carry cholesterol to build up a mass plaque on the arterial walls. This is known as hypercholesterolemia, the cause of atherosclerosis that causes problems like heart attack or strokes.
Saturated fats, trans fats, fat red meats, chicken, dairy products (fat not removed) are high cholesterol foods and is should be avoided. Avoid alcohol consumption and high sodium food sources. You should plan your diet for lowering cholesterol.
A list of low cholesterol foods that can be combined to create low cholesterol menus is given below:

Whole grains such as oatmeal are the best option for lowering cholesterol. They also provide you lots of energy because they have high-energy content and dietary fiber content. Grains are effective foods to lower cholesterol level. They are also effective in controlling weight. Wheat bread, beans, potatoes, pasta, and cereals can also help lower cholesterol levels.

Cholesterol Treatment – Simple and Useful Home Remedies for Cholesterol
Cholesterol is the fat-like substance, which is an important ingredient for life. The human body contains about 100 g of cholesterol. The human body itself manufactures its required cholesterol, and any cholesterol that comes from diet is extra — and it’s harmful.
Benefits of body cholesterol -
Most of the cholesterol in the body is included in the membranes from which cells formation takes place. It is also the starting ingredient for the synthesis of the steroid hormones such as progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, cortisol and mineralocorticoids.
Cholesterol is also the originator from which the body synthesizes Vitamin D.
Cholesterol helps in the synthesis of bile acids in the liver. This is required for the absorption of fat from the contents of the intestine. The liver synthesizes about 1500 – 2000 mg of new cholesterol each day, from the products of fat metabolism.
What is high blood cholesterol? Is it risky?
High blood cholesterol termed as hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and some types of stroke. Too much cholesterol in the blood leads to development of fatty deposits in the blood vessels that supply the heart and other parts of the body. These deposits make it difficult for enough blood to flow through the arteries, and the heart may not get as much oxygen-rich blood as it needs, which increases the chances of a heart attack
(atherosclerosis). Decreased blood flow to the brain can also cause a cerebral stroke.
Healthy levels of cholesterol -
A person’s total blood cholesterol will fall into any one of these categories:
1) Desirable — Less than 200 mg/dL
2) Borderline high risk — 200-239 mg/dL
3) High risk — 240 mg/dL and over – risk of developing coronary heart disease.
What is HDL and LDL?
Cholesterol is transported through the blood attached to proteins, known as lipoprotein. The two main types of lipoproteins are:
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) – “bad” cholesterol that builds up in the walls of the arteries, making them hard and narrow.
High-density lipoprotein (HDL) – “good” cholesterol that picks up excess cholesterol and takes it back to the liver.
Total cholesterol is the sum of HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and 20% of the triglyceride value.
It is important to be aware of the fact that -
1 high LDL values are bad – higher the chance of getting a heart disease
2 high HDL values are good – lower the chance of getting a heart disease.
Thus, cardiac risk ratio for an individual = total cholesterol divided by HDL cholesterol
A cardiac risk ratio greater than 7 is a danger sign.
What factors cause a high LDL and low HDL level in the body?
1) Unhealthy lifestyle habits of an individual such as lack of physical activity, being overweight.
2) Faulty eating habits. High intake of saturated fats, animal protein, butter, cheese, fried foods all lead to high cholesterol.
3) Other factors that play a role in high cholesterol include genetic composition which restricts cells from removing LDL cholesterol from the blood efficiently or cause the liver to produce too much cholesterol. This is regardless of a person’s saturated fat and cholesterol dietary intake.
4) Smoking, alcoholism, tobacco – as it damages the walls of the blood vessels, making them prone to accumulate fatty deposits.
5) High blood pressure as increased pressure on the artery walls damages arteries, leading to speedy accumulation of fatty deposits.
6) Diabetes contributes to high LDL cholesterol and low HDL cholesterol. High blood sugar also damages the lining of the arteries.
Cholesterol Treatment and prevention -
1) Lifestyle changes help improve the cholesterol level. Eat a healthy diet, do regular physical activity and avoid smoking/drinking.
2) Lose excess weight. Plan a daily exercise regime such as swimming, walks, or any other sport.
3) Eat heart friendly foods
4) Choose healthier fats such as monounsaturated fats. Almonds, olive, peanut and walnuts are good sources of healthy fat.
5) Limit cholesterol intake – no more than 300 mg of cholesterol per day — or less than 200 mg if you have heart disease.
6) Eat whole grains, whole wheat flour.
7) Consume lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, as they are rich in dietary fibre, which help lower cholesterol. Consume less of animal protein, and more of fish which is rich in omega – 3 fatty acids
7) Quit smoking and drinking
In spite of the above, if LDL remains high, the doctor may prescribe some medication or combination of medication depending on various factors, such as age, current health, risk factors, and possible side effects.
