Toronto, Canada (AHN Sports) – Austin Jackson hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning and Brad Penny followed Justin Verlander’s no-hitter with 7 2/3 solid innings as the Detroit Tigers posted a 5-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in the rubber game of a three-game series Sunday.

Brandon Inge and Jhonny Peralta had two hits and Miguel Cabrera singled home an insurance run in the eighth for Detroit, which has won five of six.

Jackson, who hit .293 with four homers as a rookie last season, entered this series batting just .190 with one homer, but was 7-for-13 over the weekend. He drilled a 2-2 offering from Toronto starter Jo Jo Reyes (0-3) over the fence in left field for a 4-2 lead after Inge kept the seventh alive with a two-out single.

Penny (3-3) yielded just a two-run homer to Jose Bautista – his 10th of the season – in the third. Detroit got those runs back in the fourth on an RBI double by Victor Martinez and a run-scoring base hit by Peralta.

Penny was charged with seven hits with no walks and a strikeout in his longest outing since April 25, 2010.

Daniel Schlereth got the final out in the eighth and Jose Valverde struck out the side in the ninth for his seventh save in seven chances.

Reyes allowed five runs on eight hits in seven innings. Yuniel Escobar had two hits for Toronto.

Ontario Court Awards $455.7 Million To Policyholders In Class Action Suit

Toronto, Ontario, Canada (AHN) – An Ontario court has ordered Great-West Life Assurance to pay $455.7 million in damages to life insurance policy holders in one of the largest class action lawsuits in Canada.

The suit was caused by the 1997 takeover by Great-West of London Insurance Group for $2.9 billion. To help finance 7.5 percent of the takeover, Great-West and London Life transferred $220 million from policies of participating account holders. Great-West replaced the cash with an accounting instrument called prepaid expenses asset (PPEA), but never repaid back the money borrowed.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Johanne Morissette found the action of the two insurance firms against the law because it violated Canada’s Insurance Companies Act. Morisette explained in his ruling issued Friday that the PPEA are assets not recognized by generally accepted accounting principles.

The $455.7 million in damages covers the $220 million borrowed, $172.7 million in foregone investment income and $63 million for taxes. The amount will be split between the two insurance companies — $372.2 million from London Life and $83.5 million from Great-West.

Great-West said it would appeal the court’s decision because of what the company believes are significant errors in aspects of the decision. However, Great-West said if its appeal fails, payment of the damage would not have a material impact on the capital of the two companies.

Cholesterol Drug Crestor Possible Treatment For Prostate Cancer

Ayinde O. Chase – AHN News Editor

Toronto, Canada (AHN) – Rosuvastatin—a commonly prescribed cholesterol drug sold as Crestor—may be effective in treating prostate cancer.

Researchers found that it suppresses the growth of transplanted human prostate cancer cells in mice.

“Our data provided solid pre-clinical evidence and a strong rationale for clinical trials of statins in the treatment of prostate cancer,” said Dr. Xiao-Yan Wen at St. Michael’s Hospital., whose research appears in the September issue of European Urology.

The link gives hope to medical professionals and those suffering from the disease because despite improvements in treatments such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, many patients still progress to advanced stages.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men. Prostate cancer affected 18 percent of American men and caused death in 3 percent in 2005. In Canada, where the study was conducted, one in seven men will develop the disease during his lifetime and one in 27 will die from it.

Food to Lower Your Cholesterol

August 15, 2010 · Posted in cholesterol · Comment

High cholesterol levels are slowly killing off the population. The increasing prevalence and risk of hypertension and heart disease in Americans are ringing the alarm bells in the country’s health sector. Health officials are desperately trying to find ways to combat the rise and make people aware of the eating lifestyle and exercise lifestyle that they are imbibing.

The truth about cholesterol

Although cholesterol is mainly the culprit in the increase in high blood pressure in the body, not all cholesterol that we take in is essentially bad. In fact, small amounts of cholesterol is being used by the body in the production of bile salts and in the transformation of Vitamin D. Cholesterol also plays a role in the balancing of hormones especially in women.

There are two kinds of cholesterol, the good and the bad as the lay people will like to clal them. The bad cholesterol or the LDL is the kind that is often found in saturated fats and trans fatty acids. These are taken into the body through foods that are pre-packed and prepared such as potato chips, canned goods, etc. LDL cholesterol adheres to the walls of the arteries. High levels of LDL can form plaques in the arterial walls that may eventually cause clogging in the passageway of the blood. This slows down the blood flow, which in turn makes it hard for the heart to pump. This scenario describes the initial stages of hypertension and coronary heart problems.

What to eat

The good cholesterol HDL on the other hand lower the levels of LDL in the body by helping transport the LDL to the liver where it is excreted. HDL cholesterol can be found in fishes as well as in nuts.

Other foods that can lower the cholesterol levels are fruits and vegetables. These foods do not contain that much cholesterol so whatever you have, you will not be adding to its levels.

Another great thing about veggies and fruits is the fact that they are great sources of fibers that the body also need to combat the increase in LDL cholesterol. Berries, fruits that are citrus and carrots are just some of the fruits that you can count on.  Another food that can dramatically reduce the levels of cholesterol in the body is the soya. Fiber-rich food, soya as well as almonds and plant sterols figure in a landmark study conducted by University of Toronto that reduced the cholesterol levels of the participants by as much as 20 percent. Eating oats, olive oil and barley are also great ways to lower LDL.

Another great source of cholesterol are foods that are really oily. To lower one’s LDL, one must consciously avoid foods that are deep-fried. If you have to eat fried foods, make sure that the oil that you use is made out of vegetable.

Never use butter as this is rich in saturated fats. Instead, use margarine as a substitute. Try to also steam, braise, boil or bake your food. You will find that they are tastier and healthier.

Not just the food

There are many factors that contribute to the rise of cholesterol levels in the body. In addition to one’s eating lifestyle, there is the age, the gender, the family history and of course the amount of physical activity that the person does.

Exercise is fairly important in keeping LDL cholesterol at bay. What is more, it strengthens the body’s resistance as well as improves blood circulation.
